Fabian Schar has been called up to the Switzerland national team ahead of their World Cup European qualifiers with Italy (November 12) and Bulgaria (November 15) and posted a picture on his Instagram to mark the occasion.

The 29-year-old has made 67 caps for Switzerland and featured in every Euro 2020 games, but it remains to be seen if he’ll start at centre-back for their upcoming games during the international break.

Schar played a full 90 minutes in their last outing – a 4-0 World Cup qualifier win over Lithuania on October 12 – but he’s not played regularly at club level this season so his place isn’t guaranteed.

For Newcastle, Schar has made only two appearances and spent the majority of the campaign as an unused substitute. The 29-year-old hasn’t played for the Magpies since August’s 2-2 draw with Southampton, so he’s likely to be rusty.

Newcastle have since appointed Eddie Howe as their new manager and he’ll want to cast an eye on the squad before picking his side, so Schar will have an opportunity to get back into the team. And if he’s a regular at club level, his place in Switzerland’s side should be secured.
