Newcastle’s title pursuit takes hit as details emerge of the Titanic sinking on this day in 1912

On this day in 1912, Newcastle United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa and threw away any hope of winning the First Division title. The Magpies dropped points in five of their last six league games that season, resulting in Blackburn Rovers finishing as Champions.

United ended up in third place with 44 points from 38 games, five shy of leaders Blackburn and two short of runners-up Everton. But not only was April 20th eventful for Newcastle’s title pursuit falling apart, it was also the day when details of the Titanic sinking were reported about in newspapers.

The British passenger liner struck an iceberg on a maiden voyage to New York City, resulting in more than 1500 people dying. The report went into detail on how the ship went down and how scared people were at the time, courtesy of testimony from survivors.

But Newcastle will remember the day for other reasons, as they missed out on silverware when it was in their hands to succeed. They dropped 10 points in the run-in and gifted the crown to Blackburn.
