A number of Newcastle United supporters have hit out at comments made by Steve Bruce suggesting that his remit is to keep the Magpies in the Premier League.
That comes after the manager had previously claimed that the objective was to try and break into the top half of the Premier League table come the end of the season. However, that seems rather ambitious at the minute, with Newcastle’s form now reflecting some of the statistics from their performances.
The 2-0 defeat at Manchester City on Saturday means Newcastle have lost three of their last four matches; and although they are still only four points off 10th place, they are in danger of dropping into the relegation battle if that run continues. Bruce will be aware by now that many supporters are starting to turn, and although he described the reactions of some fans to the Carabao Cup exit to Brentford as ‘histrionics’, he will know he is in a difficult moment.
That perhaps came out in his latest comments to the media after the Man City defeat that his goal has been to keep Newcastle in the Premier League this term and then try and ‘edge the clubs forwards.’ Comments like that are unlikely to appease supporters who are now growing ever more vocal in their calls for a potential change.
Newcastle fans rage at Steve Bruce comments
Many Newcastle fans were frustrated that Bruce was willing to publicly show such a lack of ambition, while others believe those comment illustrate that he is not the right person to guide them into the top 10 of the Premier League.
The only thing he is actually good at is lowering expectations.

Most backed coach under Ashley in the transfer market yet he can’t even back himself to make a top half finish with the squad given to him. Just goes to show how second rate he is. A disgrace to the position that so many others would snap his arm off for. #nufc #BruceOut

It’s called moving the goalposts Chris , he criticised Rafa for his formation & style yet he’s playing the same formation with No style , no ambition , no plan & it’s totally depressing to watch 🤷♂️⚫️⚪️

Clubs going backwards with him at the helm hence why he’s now saying avoid drop instead of his top 10 remark, he’s back tracked because he’s not good enough #BruceOut

Knows he has absolutely no chance of achieving that target so is backtracking at a rate of knots. Should we survive, he’ll claim it’s a resounding success.

It’s a shocking admission from the Manager, he has no integrity whatsoever, if he complies with this.
