A number of Newcastle United supporters have been reacting to reports that the Magpies are potentially interested in bringing Rangers defender James Tavernier back to Tyneside.
Tavernier was allowed to leave the Magpies for Wigan Athletic in 2014 after making just two Premier League appearances for Newcastle. The roving right-back has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most dangerous full-backs in Europe during his time with Rangers, who he joined in the summer of 2015.
The 29-year-old has been in sensational form so far this season for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, managing to register an incredible tally of 10 goals and seven assists, as well as averaging 1.8 shots, 2.3 key passes and 2.2 tackles per game (Sofascore). His form has also been impressive in Europe, with two goals and three assists in five Europa League group matches.
Newcastle have not had a free-flowing attack-minded right-back for some time now and Tavernier would arrive with the potential to provide much more of an attacking threat from both open play and set pieces. It has been reported by the Daily Mail that the Magpies are interested in bringing him back to St James’ Park, but it could prove tricky to pry him away from Rangers.
Newcastle fans react to reported James Tavernier interest
Many Newcastle fans were keen to suggest that Tavernier would be an excellent signing for the Magpies to make in the winter window, but some were sceptical over whether the “class act” would return from Rangers given their strong chances of silverware this season.
Ive wanted James Tavernier back for years, I dont care if he doesnt play defense. Play on his strenghts and that is not an issue. He can deliver assists, he can take a set pieces, he can score #nufc https://t.co/IIINye3h22

YES! bring him home 🙂

Can't see us paying £20-30 m for him. We will struggle to sign Jetro even tho he wants to join us and will come on a free.

Tavernier is a class act in Scotland. Probably a couple of years too late for us. Would rather we targeted a younger right-back. This feels like a Bruce target. #nufc https://t.co/wVDcY8uRYf
