Newcastle fans react to potential January move for Fikayo Tomori

A number of Newcastle United supporters have been reacting to reports from The Northern Echo that the Magpies could be interested in making a move to sign Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori in January.

Tomori enjoyed a promising breakthrough campaign for the Blues last season, with the defender having returned to Stamford Bridge from a successful loan spell with Derby County, where he won the club’s Player of the Year award under Frank Lampard in the 2018/19 season. The 22-year-old averaged 2.8 clearances and 1.9 tackles per game in his 15 Premier League appearances last term (Sofascore).

That form earned him a call-up to the England squad last year, but since Chelsea added the experienced Thiago Silva to their squad in the summer, the defender has dropped down the pecking order and it is thought that the Blues could be set to allow him to leave in January on loan.

Newcastle are set to focus their attention on bringing in players on loan this January, with funds stretched due to the global pandemic and their legal challenge to the Premier League over the proposed takeover, per The Northern Echo. The Magpies still have both loan slots open to them for English top-flight arrivals in the winter window.

The Magpies were linked with Arsenal’s Rob Holding in the summer, and they could look to add to their options at centre-back by moving for Tomori in January.

Many Newcastle fans were keen to point out that the Magpies should focus their attention on adding to their midfield rather than signing a defender, with some fans questioning the club’s transfer logic considering that they allowed Florian Lejuene to depart on loan to Alaves.
