Newcastle United could look to rival fellow Premier League clubs in a potential move for Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram in January, with the 26-year-old set to leave the Blades.
The Magpies are set to be in the market for more low-cost additions during the January transfer window as they look to pull of more signings like the acquisitions of Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser on free transfers in the summer, per Chronicle Live. Lundstram has emerged as one potential player who the Magpies could target in that winter transfer search.
Lundstram is set to leave Sheffield United either in January or the summer after he rejected the Blades’ offer of an extension on better terms to his current deal, per Sky Sports. That has alerted the likes of Crystal Palace and Burnley to his potential situation as well as Rangers, per Daily Mail.
That means Steve Bruce’s side could face competition for the midfielder, but the Magpies showed in the summer that they can attract players to the club ahead of Premier League rivals, with Callum Wilson having decided to move to St James’ Park ahead of Aston Villa, per Express and Star.

Lundstram’s decision to reject Sheffield United’s contract offer should raise plenty of interest in the 26-year-old, especially considering he was one of the Blades’ most impressive performers in their first season back in the Premier League last term. The midfielder managed five goals and three assists as well as creating eight big chances (Sofascore), figures which saw him labelled as ‘fantastic’ by Chris Wilder.
That suggests he could add some extra creativity and a goal threat from midfield which Newcastle are somewhat lacking. The Magpies’ lack of threat and creativity from the middle of the park is becoming a major issue, with Bruce’s side having recorded the fewest shots in the top flight so far this term.
For a likely cut-price fee, Lundstram would be a good addition for the Magpies, and whilst it would not seem the most glamorous of signings, he has the ability in possession which would benefit Bruce’s side. If Newcastle want to conserve funds in January, then a move for the Blades midfielder would appear a potential risk-free signing.
