Newcastle United are believed to be set to open new contract talks with Dwight Gayle to prevent him from leaving the club in January, according to sources at Football Insider.
Gayle, who is currently recovering from a knee injury and is yet to feature this season, was included in Steve Bruce’s 25 man Premier League squad for the first half of the season and is thought to be recovering well.
Now, the 30-year-old who scored four times for the Magpies last term, could be in line to receive a new deal at the club.
With his current deal expiring next summer, the club would be reticent to see the former Crystal Palace man leave on a free.
However, given his recent injury record, coupled with the start made by Callum Wilson, many fans may be surprised to see a potential new deal on the cards.

Gayle has a record of a goal in slightly less than every three matches since joining the Magpies, however, those numbers have been on the decline and with his injury troubles, his best days could well now be behind him.
For manager Steve Bruce, he obviously sees a future for the striker as part of his squad, although the new deal could also be a way of ensuring the club receive a reasonable fee should they wish to sanction a sale.
Bruce’s squad does lack regular goals outside of new man Wilson, both Joelinton and the returning Andy Carroll have struggled for goals in their respective spells.
