Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs launched a raid at St James’ Park yesterday morning, seeking files and documents relating to transfers and agent payments, with managing director Lee Charnley arrested as part of the investigation.
West Ham’s London Stadium was also raided by HMRC as 180 officers were deployed in England and France as they look to crank down on tax fraud within football.
It’s believed that HMRC are diving into documents to find secret payments made to agents which may have slipped under their radar.
Sylvain Marveaux is one of many people within football to have been arrested amid these allegations.
The French midfielder spent five seasons on the books at Newcastle between 2011 and 2016 prior to his release late last season where he returned to France with Lorient.
