Loan deal with view to buy touted for Townsend

Andros Townsend was a real flash in the pan for Newcastle last season, scoring four goals following his move from Tottenham but unfortunately, the club’s relegation meant he had to leave the club and he went on to join Crystal Palace.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle are eager to re-sign Townsend on an initial loan deal until the end of the season with an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

Newcastle signed Townsend from Tottenham in a £12m deal last January but despite his efforts, the Toon were relegated to the Championship and Alan Pardew shelled out a similar fee to bring the England international to Selhurst Park.

Townsend has scored just one goal in 22 appearances for the Eagles and new manager Sam Allardyce, eager to freshen up his squad this month, could offload the winger to pave the way for his own recruits.

Rafa Benitez met with Townsend twice after Newcastle’s relegation to persuade him to stay on Tyneside but the 25-year-old cited his international prospects as the reason he had to leave the club, but left the door open for a possible return to St. James’ Park if the club are promoted.

With his future at Palace bleak and Newcastle on the road to a Premier League return, Townsend could return to the North East to ensure they are promoted before signing a permanent deal.
