Magpies abroad: Isaac Hayden makes Under-21 debut in 5-0 England win

Newcastle United’s Isaac Hayden made his debut for England’s Under-21 side last night as the Young Lions strolled to a 5-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Hayden, who has impressed during the early months of his Newcastle career after signing from Arsenal in the summer, was named in the starting XI by Aidy Boothroyd and played the full 90 minutes.

The Magpies’ midfielder had represented England at every stage from under-16 to under-20, and now has an under-21 cap to his name as well.

Hayden, who already has a goal to his name in Newcastle colours, impressed in the middle of the park as John Swift, Tammy Abraham (2), Josh Onomah and Duncan Watmore sent England on their way to a comprehensive victory at Walsall’s Banks’ Stadium.

The former Hull loanee was receptive of praise from his teammates last night as well, with Southampton’s Nathan Redmond congratulating Hayden on his debut appearance.

Elsewhere on the international scene last night, Grant Hanley and Matt Ritchie both featured for Scotland in their 3-0 defeat at home to Slovakia, while Kyle Cameron played the full match for Scotland’s under-21 loss to Macedonia in front of a crowd of more than 20,000.

Newcastle’s match-winner in their last outing at Rotherham, Christian Atsu, started for Ghana as they drew 1-1 with South Africa in an international friendly.

DeAndre Yedlin also played the full game for the USA in their 1-1 draw with New Zealand, but Achraf Lazaar was limited to a place on the bench as Morocco cruised to a 4-0 friendly win over Canada.

matchday.
