Millwall gaffer Neil Harris has told South London Press he wants to sign Newcastle United winger Shane Ferguson as a permanent addition to his squad. Ferguson, a current Northern Ireland international, has impressed at The Den this season, with 22 appearances bringing 2 goals.
However, the winger’s deal in South London will end this weekend, bringing an end to his most productive loan spell yet. Ferguson seems to have enjoyed producing displays within a young and energetic side, for which Harris has gained plenty of plaudits.
Harris told reporters,
We would like to keep him past the end of this loan, for all season or further.
We are pushing really hard to keep him after this weekend. We have spoken to Newcastle and to the player and are trying in all shapes and forms to retain his services.
We have gone through the proper channels and made it very clear to Newcastle about that. And the Millwall board are being very supportive.
The boy has potential so there could be competition for him but it is Millwall who have given him the opportunity to play first-team football, to get games and get match fit.
We can’t do any more than we already are to take him for longer and hopefully there are positive moves going on.
It is now down to Newcastle to see what his expectations are and what they want to do.
He has done really well for us. He is at a great age. I really like the lad.
We take loans for a purpose – people’s long-term availability. or with a view to getting people for a longer period. It is always because we want to give some of our own players in that position a bit more time to develop in the U21s.
Ferguson made his international debut in 2009 for Northern Ireland and had played a part in many of the national team youth groups. The 24-year-old will be hoping a good season at The Den could lead him to a place in Michael O’Neil’s Euro 2016 squad. With that in mind, the move to south-London looks more and more obvious for Fergie.
