Newcastle United are reportedly exploring a move for Manchester City right back Rico Lewis, as the young defender weighs up his future ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies are one of the six Premier League clubs, including rivals Sunderland, who are keen on Lewis. The versatile City defender is considering a move away from the Etihad due to fewer minutes.

Lewis has started just three of 10 league games and it’s cost him a chance at making the England team for the World Cup. He has just over four years on his contract.

Newcastle Eye Lewis

Lewis is highly regarded at City despite the limited game time. He recently signed a long-term contract, underlining the club’s belief in him and his potential. However, unlike last season, opportunities have been scarce, with Pep Guardiola only starting the City academy graduate a couple of times.

The report suggests the lack of game time is a growing concern for the right back. Lewis, eager to maintain his progress and play for England, could be prompted to consider a move this summer.

In an interview last year, Lewis said: “For me, I’ve never, ever seen myself at a different club. I’ve always wanted to play for City. It’s my dream club.” But TEAMtalk reports that City would not stand in his way if he pushes for a transfer, opening the door for interested clubs to make their move.

Why Newcastle are Interested

Newcastle are understandably interested given Lewis’ profile. Comfortable at both right-back and in midfield, he is a perfect modern-day midfielder, which is something manager Eddie Howe highly appreciates.

His technical quality, intelligence and tactical flexibility make him an ideal option for a side looking to evolve both in possession and structurally. With Newcastle competing in multiple competitions, adding Lewis, who can fill multiple positions, would be a significant boost.

Lewis has proven to be a valuable asset for Guardiola, who called him ‘top class’, over the years and is still contributing this season. He’s made 21 appearances across competitions, posting two goals and three assists.

Strong Competition Expected

Newcastle aren’t alone in the race. Sunderland, Everton, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Brentford and Brighton are reportedly in contention for his signature. The level of interest could complicate any potential deal, especially if Lewis prioritises guaranteed playing time over the club’s size.

For now, the situation isn’t concrete. But with Manchester City willing to move out of the way in case an offer comes under the right conditions, Newcastle United may see this as an opportunity to secure one of England’s most promising young talents.
