Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has insisted that summer signing Florian Thauvin is constantly improving as he adjusts to life in England after his move from Marseille.

Thauvin has found Premier League football to be quite the challenge since his arrival, with the 22-year-old making just nine Premier League appearances and not making a single assist, nor scoring at all.

However, despite admitting to Thauvin’s struggles, boss McClaren has come to the defence of his £12million signing, claiming that he is “getting there”.

Speaking to The Chronicle, the 54-year-old Toon boss said:

I see definite signs of his adaptation in the last few weeks. Certainly in terms of training and certainly on Saturday when he came on. He was excellent and there was a previous game – Liverpool at home. When you see the things he can do out there, when he puts it all together.

McClaren will be hopeful of a good performance from the Frenchman this weekend, as United aim to secure an all-important win against Everton on Boxing Day.
