Former striker linked with shock return

According to The Nation, fierce rivals Newcastle United and Sunderland are battling it out for the signing of 31-year-old striker, Obafemi Martins.

The Northern teams have recently been linked with the Nigerian international on a short-term loan, as it is now the MLS off-season.

The strong, pacey forward has played for Newcastle before, scoring 28 goals in 88 appearances for the Magpies.

Martins, who has played for the likes of Inter Milan and Wolfsburg as well, would be a crucial fit for either side. Both teams are struggling in the final third of the pitch, and this is evident in their current league positions.

Steve McClaren is reportedly hopeful of bringing the Nigerian back to St James’ Park, in order to improve his somewhat goal-shy team. Martins played for the Magpies between 2006 and 2009, and quickly became a fan favourite.

Sam Allardyce also has experience working with Obafemi Martins – he spent time with the striker during his managerial tenure at St James’ Park and is aware of the forward’s talent.

Martins has scored 40 goals and acquired 23 assists in the MLS over the past three seasons, which is a highly respectable statistic.

Would you welcome the return of Obafemi?
