Newcastle have been given an encouraging boost in their chase to sign former England and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole from Roma this January.
The Daily Express report that the Italian giants are looking to offload the experienced defender in the upcoming window, and while he is looking for potential suitors, a move back to England with Steve McClaren and Newcastle could very well be on the cards.
Cole, 34, was left out of Roma’s 21-man Champions League squad and is yet to make a single appearance for the Italian giants this season after being deemed surplus to requirements by manager Rudi Garcia.

Cole was failing to make an impact out in Italy prior to this season, however the arrival of promising French left-back Lucas Digne from PSG last summer did not help the Englishman’s quest to force himself back into Rudi Garcia’s plans.
For Newcastle, interest in Cole has been brewing for a long time now, with the left-back thought to be one of Steve McClaren’s priority signings. It has also been reported that at the end of last summer’s transfer window, Cole had the chance to join the Toon, but rejected it as he attempted to salvage what was left of his playing career at Roma.
The veteran defender’s contract is up next summer and Roma will be looking to cash in on Cole while they have the chance in January.
The signing of the experienced Ashley Cole would help to solidify a fairly leaky defence, which has not helped Newcastle’s chances this season so far – as they find themselves in 17th place in the Premier League
