Young prospect set to leave Newcastle

Having just signed Mike Williamson on loan, struggling Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers are keen on signing Newcastle United prodigy Ivan Toney too, reports the Shields Gazette.

The Magpies purchased the youngster from League Two side Northampton Town during the summer and Toney has managed to score in each of his last four appearances for Newcastle’s Under-21 side.

Wolves are failing to live up to their expectations this season and having been originally tipped for the promotion places, they now sit in the bottom half of the second tier of English football.

Despite the signing of Benik Afobe, Wolves have struggled to find the back of the net, only scoring an average of 1.15 goals a match.

Toon defender Mike Williamson has recently left St James’ Park for the Championship, after securing a one-month loan to the Molineux.

Kenny Jackett, the Wolves boss, is eager to bring Toney to his side and was at Newcastle’s Under-21 match against Derby to scout the youngster.

Jackett could face competition from Burton Albion manager, and ex-Chelsea star, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Hasselbaink is also suggested to be monitoring the nineteen-year-old.

Toney was named the Premier League’s Under-21 player of the month for September, for his resilient work and goal scoring ability.
