Current Ajax manager Frank De Boer has recently expressed an interest in the possibility of managing Newcastle United in the future.
Known for his illustrious playing career, De Boer was linked with taking charge of the club during the summer – but the club chose Steve McClaren instead. The former Dutch international insists that he is solely focused on managing Ajax, though.
De Boer has always wanted to take charge of a team in the Premier League, and he picked out Newcastle and Liverpool to talk about. He said the following (Quoted in the Chronicle):
They are fantastic clubs. Liverpool and Newcastle – with supporters behind them – it is a fantastic environment to coach but this year it is important for me to do well at Ajax and then we will see.
The chances of De Boer managing Newcastle in the near future remain slim, with current boss McClaren under no immediate pressure. The club is willing to give him all the time he needs to deliver success.
It would be foolish to completely rule out the possibility of De Boer arriving on Tyneside, as anything can happen in football. Speaking of his desire to coach in England, he said:
Yes, I think every year it comes closer of course. I’m looking maybe for another adventure. If there is an interesting club that I think with my quality I can make that team better – if I can, then I will take that chance.
