Janmaat believes lack of belief is cause for concern

The Northern Echo are reporting that Newcastle defender Daryl Janmaat has said a lack of belief is what has been the downfall of Newcastle in the last two months. Newcastle are yet to win a game in the Premier League this season.

They may have failed to win a game this season, however, were superb as they drew 2-2 with the reigning Premier League champions, Chelsea. They were 2-0 up, however, they conceded two late goals to surrender the three points and only manage the one to add to their total.

Steve McClaren was made manager of Newcastle in the summer after leaving Derby County as their manager and he was allowed to spend over £50m on new arrivals at Newcastle, however, many of them have failed to bed in as of yet and certainly have not showed their true potentials as Newcastle players.

Many of Newcastle’s players have had a lacklustre start to the season, not just the new signings, and it is passed the stage of saying McClaren is still adjusting as manager. Newcastle need to start performing soon, or they will be in real trouble this season.

Janmaat, looking forward to Newcastle’s trip to 2nd place Manchester City, has admitted that most of Newcastle’s performances have been below par, however, he has blamed the failures on a lack of belief in the squad:

There have been times this season where we have shown it is in there – we just need to do it on a much more consistent basis now, maybe everyone has to believe in themselves a little bit more because we have shown we can do it. If the belief is there, then I am sure the wins will come too. The next game at Manchester City will be tough, but it’s important we go there with nothing to fear. If we play in the same way that we did against Chelsea, then I don’t think anyone would be wanting to play Newcastle, including Manchester City.

Saturday’s game hardly represents the most obvious setting for Newcastle to end their winless run as they are still to record a league victory at the Etihad.

Manchester City away is not the most blatantly clear chance at a win for Newcastle to get their first three points of the season this weekend. They are yet to get a single win at the Etihad in the Premier League in its history, however, this weekend would be a fantastic time to break the mould and get their first win:

Manchester City started the season brilliantly, but maybe they are struggling a little bit more at the moment, they got beat against West Ham a couple of weeks ago, and then they lost again against Tottenham. We know they are still a very good side, but we have to have the belief that we can do something there. If we have that belief, and play in the same way that we did against Chelsea, then I’m sure we can get a good result.

The performance that Newcastle put in against Chelsea at the weekend was a huge upgrade on their performances and Janmaat has said that he thinks Newcastle have answered some of the questions posed of the squad in the opening two months of the season:

Hopefully, it has answered a few questions, I don’t think there were many people expecting us to get anything, but we did it. I thought we reacted well to everything that had happened and played some good football, especially in the first half. Chelsea are a very good side, with some really good players, and you know they are going to press. We were obviously under pressure, but we scored two goals and there is plenty to take out of the game. Before the game, I think we would have taken a point.
