Cole snubs deadline day switch to Newcastle

Former England international Ashley Cole rejected a deadline day move to Newcastle United, despite being out of favour at AS Roma, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (quoted by the Express).

The ex-Chelsea man arrived in Rome on a free transfer last summer, but has only made eleven league appearances since securing the move.

Roma boss Rudi Garcia then elected to sign a replacement, in the shape of Lucas Digne, and drop the 34-year-old from the 2015/16 squad lists for the Champions League and Serie A, as per ESPN.

Despite clearly not being in Garcia’s plans and only being able to feature in Coppa Italia fixtures, Cole snubbed the chance to sign for Newcastle on deadline day in favour of a Roma stay.

Reports in Italy state Cole is now expected to leave in January instead, but Newcastle are unlikely to come calling again. Instead, Graham Carr is likely to identify a short-list of younger, hungrier left-backs desperate for a Premier League switch – with the potential to sell them on for significantly more in a few windows time.
