At 6pm tomorrow, the British transfer window slams shut and clubs can finally focus solely on football – for a few months at least. Though it’s six hours shorter than normal, this summer’s deadline day is expected to be one of the biggest yet – with players like Juventus’ Paul Pogba and Manchester United’s David De Gea still being heavily linked with moves away.
While there is plenty of business still to be done across Europe, it seems fairly quiet on the transfer front for Newcastle United – with only exits of several fringe players expected in the coming hours. So, what can the Geordie faithful expect on deadline day?
French forward Yoan Gouffran, who can play on either wing or upfront, has been heavily linked with an exit from St James’ Park throughout the summer, having been deemed surplus to requirements by Steve McClaren. The 29-year-old was linked with a return to his homecountry, with St Etienne and Nantes reportedly interested, but it is Hull City that currently lead the chase for £4.2million-rated man. Their Championship rivals Middlesbrough and Derby County also hold an interest in the forward – whose scored 12 times in 88 appearances for Newcastle.

Gouffran’s fellow compatriot Gabriel Obertan has also been linked with an exit from Newcastle this window, but a deal seems increasingly unlikely. Only Nantes and St Etienne have expressed an interest in signing the former Manchester United winger, but, with the French transfer window slams shut at midnight tonight, time is running out for the Ligue 1 duo to get their man.
Haris Vuckic has made it very clear he intends to leave Newcastle this summer in order to gain first-team football and reignite his career, though a move hasn’t materialised so far. Rangers, as well as clubs in Turkey and France, were interested, but Vuckic has seemingly snubbed their interest in favour of a move to a Championship club. Newcastle have slapped a £450,000 price-tag on the Slovenia international, but it’s currently unclear whether anyone is prepared to meet the asking price. If not, I expect the 23-year-old to be loaned out in the coming weeks to a Championship outfit – with a view to permanent.
Mike Williamson and Rob Elliot were players many expected to leave Newcastle this summer, though the rumour mill has failed to generate much for the pair. With their contracts expiring at the end of the season, I would still expect the fringe duo depart – whether that be permanently tomorrow or on a season-long loan in a few days time.

The only other player linked with a deadline day exit is Papiss Cisse. The 29-year-old has publicly aired his frustration at the lack of game time this season, despite scoring in Newcastle’s season opener against Southampton. Madou Diene, agent of Cisse, revealed his client could still depart this summer and stated: “Nobody wants to be at a club where you don’t feel wanted.”
Can we expect any incomings on deadline day? The honest answer is no – unless a deal can be struck for German striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga. Reports in Germany (as stated by HITC) claim Hamburg are looking to sell the 23-year-old before the window slams shut and long-term admirers Newcastle could be tempted – especially if a buyer for Papiss Cisse is found.

Even without a deadline day signing, this transfer window has been a success for Newcastle, with five fresh faces arriving at the clubs Benton base – Georginio Wijnaldum from PSV Eindhoven; Chancel Mbemba and Aleksandar Mitrovic from RSC Anderlecht; Ivan Toney from Northampton and Florian Thauvin from Marseille.
