Newcastle target pens new five-year deal

Newcastle have missed out on reported target Brighton & Hove Albion defender Lewis Dunk after he put pen-to-paper on a new five-year contract. Everton, West Ham and West Brom were also among the clubs monitoring Dunk’s situation.

Dunk has been linked with a move to Tyneside throughout summer, with Steve McClaren keen on bolstering his defensive options, as Mike Williamson heads towards the exit door.

McClaren has been tracking the 23-year-old for some time, with The Mirror claiming Dunk was on his radar whilst he was in charge of Deby County.

Even though Newcastle’s defence kept a superb clean sheet at Old Trafford on Saturday, the Geordie faithful are still hopeful of another centre-back arrival this summer.

While Aymen Abdennour of AS Monaco also remains on Newcastle’s radar, Valencia and Juventus are the front-runners for his signature, so the fans’ wishes of another defensive addition may not be forthcoming this window.
