Newcastle lining up move for defensive giant

Newcastle are ready to sign 6 ft 7 Danish centre-back Jannik Vestergaard, reports the Metro and TMW.

Vestergaard is currently plying his trade for Bundesliga side Werder Bremen and his performances last season caught the eye of various club scouts around Europe. At just 23 years old, the Dane has a very bright future in the game and he was impressive at this Summer’s European U21 Championship.

Newcastle are said to be keen on acquiring the in-demand giant’s signature, in an attempt to bolster their defensive options. Werder Bremen have reportedly set a £7m price tag on him, and Everton and Galatasaray are also interested in signing the centre-back.

Vestergaard has played for Hoffenheim, another Bundesliga side and is said to be keen on a different challenge in another league – preferably the Premier League. He moved to Bremen in January earlier this year and has made 15 appearances for the club. He scored one goal and won an average of 63% of his aerial duels last season.

The well sought after Dane would most certainly be a welcome addition to Newcastle – as he would bring a much needed aerial presence to our back four. At £7m, it’s no wonder many clubs are after the player.
