Newcastle sent scouts to watch highly-rated Leeds United defender Sam Byram over the weekend, according to reports.
The young Englishman is considered as one of the best young defenders outside of the Premier League and has been long sought-after by top-tier sides.
Everton, as well as rivals Sunderland have been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old right-back, who impressed Steve McClaren last season as he had a close eye on his progress while managing former club Derby County.
Byram has made 120 career appearances for Leeds, scoring 17 goals which is a decent return from his position, and is also a danger from set plays and dead-ball situations.
Having released Ryan Taylor at the start of the summer, Newcastle don’t have much in terms of depth behind Daryl Janmaat at right-back, and Sam Byram could be a very wise signing for the club, as he has the potential to become and England international.
However, the asking price for the youngster is £8m, which could be an issue.
