Newcastle have had an £11million bid rejected by Bordeaux for Uruguayan striker Diego Rolan, according to the Express.
Although the bid was rejected, it is believed that McClaren is still keen on signing the 22-year-old. Rolan has been linked to Newcastle on a number of occasions in recent weeks and is seemingly the club’s plan B should they fail in their bid to sign QPR striker Charlie Austin.
An improved bid for the Uruguay international could prove to be successful with Bordeaux confident in signing a replacement for Rolan in the next few weeks. Newcastle have already spent £13m on a striker, Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht, but McClaren is still keen on bolstering his attacking options with one more addition.
Rolan would certainly offer a different dimension to Newcastle’s attack, with his ferocious speed and exquisite dribbling skills. He has scored 17 goals for French outfit Bordeaux and has played regularly in this summer’s Copa America for Uruguay.
In the same article, it is also reported that Newcastle hold a firm interest in Barnsley defender Mason Holgate.
