Newcastle confirm Toney signing

Newcastle United have officially unveiled their fourth signing of the summer, in the shape of Ivan Toney from Northampton Town.

Since making his debut at 16, and becoming Northampton’s youngest ever player, Toney has been a regular for the League Two outfit, attracting attention from Premier League and Championship sides.

The Magpies stepped up their efforts to sign Toney last week, after agreeing a £500,000 fee with Northampton. As part of the deal, Toney had to undergo a two-day trial on Tyneside, before a deal could be finalised. He obviously impressed, as the deal is now complete.

Upon signing for the Magpies, Toney told the club’s official website: “I’m happy to be here and very excited.”

“The players here are a great standard and I can’t wait to get going and show what I’m all about.

“Being a young lad who is scoring goals in the Football League was a great thing. Now I want to progress here and eventually do it in the Premier League.”

Newcastle’s football development manager, Peter Beardsley had this to say: “We have been very impressed with Ivan already.

“He is a very good player, with great enthusiasm and a first-class attitude, and has all the attributes to have a bright future at the Club.”
