Newcastle are set to step up their efforts to land Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard, according to ESPN sources.
Steve McClaren is no stranger to Lingard. They worked together last season at Derby County and McClaren is a well-known admirer of the England under-21 international.
While at Derby, McClaren was impressed with the youngster and he feels Lingard could bring something to the Newcastle squad.
Lingard is no stranger to being sent out on loan. The 22-year-old has previously enjoyed loan spells at Leicester, Birmingham and Brighton & Hove Albion, before heading to the Rams – where he made 15 appearances, scoring twice in the process.
If Lingard does join the Magpies, he will join Wijnaldum, Mitrovic and Mbemba as new summer recruits by Newcastle, but only time will tell if he will be able to secure game time.
Meanwhile, the Magpies are set to unveil their fourth signing of the summer – Ivan Toney from Northampton Town for £500,000.
