Newcastle lead N’Jie chase

Newcastle United have stolen a march on Arsenal and Tottenham in the race for Olympique Lyonnais forward Clinton N’Jie, according to L’Equipe.

The French news outlet state the Magpies have tabled as €15million (roughly £10.5million when converted to sterling) offer to Lyon and have now emerged as front runners for N’Jie’s signature.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move while reports surfaced last week stating Tottenham had tabled an opening bid of €10million (£7million), but Lyon’s president Jean-Michel Aulas has publicly denied these rumours.

Aulas took to Twitter to say: “After telling lies about Christophe Jallet, you are persisting with Clinton. Lyon have no need for money. Stop it!”

Newcastle’s €15million bid is short of Lyon’s €20million valuation, but the Ligue 1 outfit are open to a sale and may be prepared to negotiate with the Magpies.

According to Foot Mercato, N’Jie has now requested a new contract with a significant pay rise. Should Lyon reject his request, he is prepared to force a move away this summer.

Meanwhile, Ivan Toney is expected to be unveiled as a Newcastle player early next week, having impressed on his two-day trial.
