Courbis: Cabella made a mistake joining Newcastle

Montpellier manager Rolland Courbis has launched a furious attack on Newcastle midfielder Remy Cabella, claiming the Frenchman made a mistake joining the Magpies.

Cabella arrived on Tyneside last summer in a deal worth £12million and was hailed as a major coup by avid followers of the French Ligue 1.

However, just 12 months later, the 25-year-old is being heavily linked with a return to his home country having struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

Rolland Courbis has again criticised Cabella’s decision to join Newcastle last summer, and questioned why he would want to remain on Tyneside.

In an interview with RMC, Courbis said: “With some irony, I said that I was not mad about Newcastle [as his choice of destination].”

“I sincerely hope with all my heart, because God knows I love this little boy, that he has a huge contract financially. From being with Montpellier and being in the 23 players that represent the France team, to going to playing only a part of the games, while scoring one goal when you scored 15 or so with Montpellier, I really hope he has some financial compensation.

“If in the morning, he wakes up, and he is happy to go to train at Newcastle, he will have to question himself.”

Though Cabella struggled in his debut season in England, it would seem unfair to write off the Frenchman completely. His end product was his biggest issue – only scoring once last season – but he showed glimpses of what he is capable of.
