Argentine defender Fabricio Coloccini has emerged as a target for Olympiacos and the Greek giants are reportedly lining up a bid, according to The Express.
Coloccini has been heavily scrutinised over the past twelve months due to some questionable performances and a distinct lack of leadership. Many fans blame Coloccini’s dramatic decline on the club’s unwillingness to let him leave in 2013, when the 32-year-old pressed for a transfer to San Lorenzo – a side managed by his father. Ever since, Coloccini has made his aim to join San Lorenzo known.
In an interview earlier this summer, Captain Colo told ESPN Radio: “Some day I would go back and be able to play in San Lorenzo and retire there. Last year we had arranged the return to San Lorenzo.”
“It is clear that they must defend their right because I had a contract.”
With just one year remaining on his current contract, this window is Newcastle’s last opportunity to cash-in on Coloccini – who is free to sign a pre-contract with a foreign side in January.
Due to his contract situation, Olympiacos hope they can secure the signing of Fabricio for a cut-price and are said to be lining up a £2.5million bid. The Greek outfit are prepared to offer the player a three-year deal worth £3.75million (roughly £25,000-a-week), which could be a stumbling block as he is currently earning £60,000-a-week on Tyneside.
Also, after pressing so long for a move to his home country, would he be keen on a move to Greece?
