A number of clubs have joined the race to sign Newcastle defender Mike Williamson, according to HITC Sport. These clubs surprisingly include several Premier League sides, as well as some from the Championship.
Former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is said to be monitoring Williamson’s situation and would be keen on a reunion at Crystal Palace, while Aston Villa and several Championship clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Hull City, mull over moves.
The 31-year-old has been a regular fixture for the club in recent seasons, to the dismay of most fans, and it is believed he is now on the look out for a new club, following the signing of Chancel Mbemba from RSC Anderlecht.
He has been told he will not be a part of Steve McClaren’s plans for the coming season after being deemed surplus to requirements by the former England manager.
Since arriving on Tyneside from Portsmouth in 2010, Williamson has rather amazingly made 150 appearances for Newcastle and only have one-year remaining on his current contract. It is safe to say most fans would be relieved if ‘Iron Mike’ departed the club once and for all this summer.
