Newcastle reignite interest in Argentine

Newcastle United have reignited their interest in Argentine midfielder Ever Banega, according to Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli.

The 27-year-old – whose previously attracted attention from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United – has been on Newcastle’s radar for over a year and it now seems the Magpies are prepared to follow up their initial interest.

Sevilla are willing to sanction the sale, but only if Newcastle meet their €13million valuation (roughly £9million when converted to sterling).

In an attempt to lure him to Tyneside, Newcastle have proposed an annual salary of €3million to Banega (approximately £40,000-a-week), as per Emanuele Giulianelli.

After missing out on Marco van Ginkel to Stoke, it is conceivable that Newcastle would be interested in signing an alternative but, having just signed Georginio Wijnaldum for £14.5million, the club should have other priorities – such as signing a striker and a defender.

It has all gone relatively quiet on the transfer front. Aleksandar Mitrovic is stalling on a move to Newcastle, while defensive targets are few and far between – it seems.

What do you make of this Ever Banega rumour – a good signing or a waste? Let us know in the comments section below.
