Fellow Premier League clubs Liverpool and Tottenham could be about to go head-to-head in the battle to sign Newcastle midfielder Olivier Kemen, according to French news outlet L’Equipe.
The 18-year old, who was born in Cameroon but plays at youth international level for France, signed from Ligue 2 side Metz in 2013. He is yet to play a game for the Newcastle first-team, despite making it onto the bench towards the season’s end.
Kemen is currently at the under-19 European Championships with France, though he didn’t make it into the squad for their 1-0 win against Austria on Monday.
The midfielder, who can play in either a defensive or more attacking midfield role, did play 26 times for the under-21 side, scoring three times as they finished sixth in Division 2.
During last season, John Carver, who has since been replaced by Steve McClaren at the St. James Park helm, spoke positively about the youngster, saying that he was working with the first-team throughout the season, adding the player has ‘got the temperament’, and suggesting that his personality needed to be controlled, saying that he can be ‘a bit lively’.
