Sammy Ameobi has put pen-to-paper on a new two-year-deal with Newcastle United, and will now be loaned to Championship outfit Cardiff City to gain some valuable first-team experience.
Ameobi’s previous contract expired last week and was therefore able to join the club of his choice on a free transfer – though Newcastle were entitled to compensation. West Brom and Real Sociedad were both heavily linked with a move for the 23-year-old.
However, newly appointed head coach Steve McClaren managed to persuade Ameobi to snub other offers and sign a new deal with his boyhood club. McClaren was not able to guarantee first-team football, so he was allowed to go out on loan.
Wolves and Cardiff were the two main contenders for his signature and, after meetings with Kenny Jackett & Russell Slade, Ameobi opted for the Welsh club.
Meanwhile, former Newcastle defender Ryan Taylor has emerged as a target for Queens Park Rangers, but they face stiff competition from Bolton for his signature.
