Newcastle await Wijnaldum’s response

Newcastle await Wijnaldum’s response

Newcastle United held ‘advanced talks’ with Georginio Wijnaldum’s representatives and are now awaiting the players response to their offer.

Should they receive a positive response from Wijnaldum’s camp, they will table a ‘serious offer’ to PSV (as per De Telegraf) in order to fend off competition and wrap up a deal quickly.

Wijnaldum has attracted attention from clubs across Europe, including PSG and Manchester United, but it was North-East rivals Sunderland who posed the biggest threat to Newcastle in their pursuit of the PSV midfielder. However, it is Steve McClaren’s side that are set to win the race for Wijnaldum’s signature.

The 24-year-old has been offered £60,000-a-week, making him the club’s joint highest earner, alongside Fabricio Coloccini. Wijnaldum has also reportedly snubbed the chance to join the Black Cats in favour of a move to St James’ Park – making the move all the more sweeter for the Geordie faithful.

Goals from midfield is definitely something Newcastle have lacked ever since Yohan Cabaye departed the club and Wijnaldum could be the man to bring this aspect to their game – having netted 18 times in 40 appearances for the Eredivisie champions last season (more than every Newcastle midfielder combined).

His arrival on Tyneside could pave the way for French powerhouse Moussa Sissoko to depart the club, with Liverpool reportedly willing to match Newcastle’s price-tag. Moussa netted four times last season and assisted twice in 34 appearances – a poor return when compared to Wijnaldum.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are hoping to complete the signing of Northampton Town youngster Ivan Toney before Wijnaldum arrives on Tyneside. An exciting week ahead for Newcastle fans it seems.
