Toon to step up efforts to sign Austin

Newcastle United will step up their efforts this week to sign highly coveted Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin, according to Colin Mafham of the Express.

Newcastle’s Board of Directors have been monitoring Austin’s situation over the past few weeks and are now set to make their move – just a day after Leicester had a £12million bid rejected.

QPR have slapped a £15million price-tag on Austin, which has deterred bids from several interested parties, including Southampton and West Brom. However, chief scout Graham Carr was impressed by the 26-year-old when scouting him last season and believes it would be a wise investment.

Though Austin has also attracted attention from Chelsea and Europa League hopefuls West Ham, Steve McClaren hopes his past experience of working with Austin (while at QPR) will be enough to lure him to Tyneside.

Meanwhile, the Mirror are reporting Newcastle are closing in on deals for Georginio Wijnaldum and Northampton Town youngster Ivan Toney, while reports from France claim a €15million bid for Diego Rolan has been tabled by the Magpies.

Finally, some movement on the transfer front it seems.
