Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson is said to be open to an exit from the club, according to The Chronicle.
Following a torrid season for the Magpies, including being accused of intentionally getting himself sent off against Leicester by interim head coach John Carver, the former Watford centre-half is weighing up his options for the future.
At 31 years old, his best years as a professional are behind him, and with Jamaal Lascelles returning from his loan spell at Nottingham Forest, Paul Dummett impressing at centre half, Steven Taylor aiming to return next season and Fabricio Coloccini remaining as captain, Williamson must realise his first team chances at Newcastle may be limited.
Newcastle will be looking to invest heavily this summer, which may lead to offloading some dead wood within the squad to generate extra funds, and with one year left on his contract, the board will be looking to cash in on him before letting him walk for free next summer – if possible.
Williamson has had a poor season to say the least, being at fault for a number of goals, basic mistakes, which has lead him from being a fan favourite to a flop within a year.
However, perhaps under a new head coach he’ll be given one final chance to redeem his long line of mistakes, with Steve McClaren now the bookies favourite to take the reigns at St. James’ Park, despite knocking them back twice previously this year whilst at Derby.
