Newcastle United have reignited their interest in Guingamp manager Jocelyn Gourvennec becoming their new head coach, according to L’Equipe.
Gourvennec, who guided Guingamp to a 10th place finish in Ligue 1, has previously had contact with Newcastle when he agreed a season long loan move for French winger Sylvain Marveaux, last summer. He was also linked with the vacancy earlier this year.
If Newcastle want their man, they’ll have to act fast. The 43-year-old has already rejected offers from Red Bull Salzburg of Austria and Leipzig of Germany. He’s also undergone talks with French rivals Rennes, but it’s believed Gourvennec is holding out for a more attractive proposition whilst taking some family time before pre-season begins.
John Carver had occupied the managerial hot seat on a temporary basis, following the departure of Alan Pardew at the turn of the year, but it is believed Lee Charnley has the Guingamp boss on his shortlist of candidates. Other potential managerial targets include David Moyes, Michael Laudrup, Roberto Di Matteo and Steve McClaren – who’s set to have ‘formal discussions’ with Lee Charnley this weekend.
The head coach vacancy was thought to have been resolved shortly after the season had finished, as John Carver was quoted as saying he wanted to know where he stood prior to going on holiday the following Wednesday. However, with ongoing discussions and several candidates to interview, it’s currently unknown when a permanent head coach will be appointed.
