Borussia Mönchengladbach have joined Newcastle United in the chase for highly-rated RSC Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, according to reports.
The 20-year-old is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Europe and has attracted attention from a number of top clubs due to his goalscoring exploits. Mitrovic has netted 18 times in 34 appearances this season, albeit in the Belgian Pro League, and now Newcastle want him to replace outbound forward Papiss Cisse – whose become subject to speculation linking him with a move away from St James’ Park.
Mitrovic is expected to make a decision on his future within the next week and, following Die Fohlen’s eleventh hour bid, his agent admitted his future may lie in Germany.
“There is great interest [in Mitrovic],” admitted Mitrovic’s agent Nenad Jestrovic in an interview with MozzartSport.
“In a few days everything will be clear. It is quite possible that he continues his career in the Bundesliga. On Friday I will fly to Germany.”
The Magpies will look to pursue other targets, including Charlie Austin and Danny Ings, should Mitrovic shun a move to Tyneside in favour of the Bundesliga outfit.
One potential stumbling block that could scupper moves for any target is the uncertainty surrounding their Premier League future. Should Newcastle fail to beat West Ham on Sunday and Hull City win, the Magpies will be relegated for the second time in six years.
