Newcastle were knocked out of the FA Cup after Manchester City fought back to secure a 3-1 victory at St James’ Park.
Harvey Barnes gave the Magpies the lead with a spectacular effort, but an unorthodox equaliser from Savinho and a brace from Omar Marmoush ensured Pep Guardiola’s men would be in Monday night’s draw.
This was the fifth meeting between the two this season. The previous encounter came two weeks earlier, when Newcastle suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Etihad, and this clash proved just as eventful.
The visitors nearly took the lead in the opening minutes as Tijjani Reijnders was played through on goal, but Malick Thiaw did enough to disrupt the midfielder’s finish.
Newcastle responded quickly, as they put Man City on the back foot.
Joe Willock forced Abdukodir Khusanov into a block before Nick Woltemade’s header was cleared off the line by Nico Gonzalez.
The Magpies’ pressure finally paid off when Sandro Tonali slid Harvey Barnes through on goal, and the winger fired it past James Trafford into the top corner.
This was the 28-year-old’s sixth goal involvement in eight FA Cup home games in Black and White.
It was City’s time to respond, and Savinho would draw the game level in an unusual fashion, when Jeremy Doku’s ball across the box bounces off the Brazilian’s foot as it tumbled into the net, as he claimed his first FA Cup goal.
The winger was nearly the catalyst of a second for the Cityzens after his brilliant run picked out Reijnders, who dragged his effort wide.
The away side completed the turnaround moments after the restart through Omar Marmoush.
Attacking down the right flank, Matheus Nunes fired it across the box to find the Egyptian unmarked as he got his sixth goal in five games against Newcastle.
Marmoush would add his second of the evening as the game headed into the final half hour.
The forward was played through by Nunes once again, and his strike had enough venom to beat Ramsdale from distance.
It’s the second time he has scored a brace at St James Park this season, having also netted twice during the Carabao Cup semi-final earlier this year.
Newcastle looked to change the game with late substitutes, but City would see the game out to advance to the quarterfinals.
It’s eight years in a row that Man City have reached the quarter-finals in this competition.
This marked the fourth defeat for Eddie Howe’s men against Man City in 2026.
Despite a win midweek against Manchester United, Newcastle are still struggling for consistency on home soil, with just four domestic wins at St James’ Park since Christmas.
Man City now turn their attention to the Spanish capital as they take on Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
Newcastle will also face Spanish opposition in their next fixture, as they take on Barcelona under the lights at St James’ Park on Tuesday, with plenty more tough fixtures up ahead.
