Newcastle confident of landing Ings

Newcastle United have stepped up their interest in Burnley striker Danny Ings, despite strong links to Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Sociedad.

Scouts from the North-East outfit have been sent to watch the soon to be out-of-contract striker on a number of occasions and have been impressed with what they have seen. He has netted ten times in his debut Premier League season, despite a recent barren run of ten games without a goal, and, as a result, has attracted attention from a string of clubs across Europe.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle remain confident that the offer of regular first team football at St James’ Park will be enough to swing the deal in their favour, but first they must secure Premier League safety on Sunday, as relegation would scupper any deal. Ings will announce his decision once the season is over.

They also report that sources close to the 22-year-old claim he is taking Newcastle’s interest “seriously” and will make his decision based on footballing reasons, rather than purely financial ones.

Although already-relegated Burnley have one more game of the current campaign left to play, Ings has already said his goodbyes to the Turf Moor faithful in their 0-0 draw with Stoke City. Upon saying his goodbyes, Ings admitted to being disappointed by the Burnley fans who elected to abuse him on Twitter.

“I got a small minority of people sending abusive tweets. That [abuse] did upset me a little bit because of everything this club means to me and what we’ve been through together,” he said. “But at the same time I understand the fans’ frustration. It was always going to be tough in this league.”
