Dutch international Geroginio Wijnaldum has alerted potential suitors, including Newcastle United and Liverpool, by revealing he is open to a move away from PSV Eindhoven this summer.
The 24-year-old has been a long term target of Newcastle’s and, with Graham Carr preparing for a summer overhaul of the depleted senior squad, this could finally be the summer they make a move for the Dutch midfielder.
Liverpool are also monitoring Wijnaldum’s situation with Brendan Rodgers keen on bolstering his sides attacking options this summer.
Although he refused to name any clubs who have expressed an interest in signing him this summer, Wijnaldum made it clear that he would welcome a new challenge.
“It could be that I leave this summer. This award [Eredivisie’s Golden Boot] shows that you have been playing well over a whole season,” he said. “There are clubs looking at me. But at this moment everything is still open for me.”
Several weeks before this interview, Georginio admitted to Sky Sports that he may be forced to leave the Eredivisie in favour of a stronger league.
“I am happy at PSV but I am a player with a lot of ambition. I want to play in a stronger league than the Eredivisie,” he said.
“With my quality I feel I can bring a lot to a team that I will join. I want to show it in the big leagues; England Italy, Spain, Germany or France. It depends on what I feel. When I feel I want to go, I will do it.”
Wijnaldum played a key role in PSV winning their first league title since 2008, netting eighteen times and assisting three in forty appearances for the Eredivisie side.
He also made a significant contribution for the Netherlands national team at the World Cup in Brazil – netting in their third-place play off win over Brazil.
