Massadio Haidara has been ruled out for the remainder of the season following knee surgery to an injury sustained earlier this season.
Having missed Newcastle’s past three games, many expected Massadio to be among those returning for the Wear-Tyne derby on Sunday. Instead, the news from John Carver’s press conference this morning was that the 22-year-old underwent an operation to remove a cyst from his knee.
“Sadio Haidara had a cyst taken off his knee last Thursday in France and he won’t be available for the rest of the season,” Carver confirmed.
Haidara’s surgery, coupled with the injury sustained by Paul Dummett, will leave Newcastle will be without a natural left-back for the remainder season. As a result, the injury prone Ryan Taylor will have to fill in for the run-in.
However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel as the Magpies’ interim boss did confirm Rolando Aarons and Mehdi Abeid are close to returning from injury problems, with the latter set to be feature in the squad for the Wear-Tyne derby.
Carver said: “We have had a good week with Mehdi Abeid and Rolando Aarons, but we are going to be careful. Rolando won’t be in the squad this weekend [to face Sunderland], but Mehdi Abeid will be.”
