It’s over for Ciaran Clark at Newcastle

Ciaran Clark joined Newcastle United from Aston Villa in 2016 and has gone on to make 129 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals with four assists, but he may have played his last game for the Magpies.

Eddie Howe’s managerial appointment saw Clark lose his place in the starting lineup and a new centre-back joining in January led to the 32-year-old being axed from Newcastle’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Clark has made 14 appearances across the board this season, starting in nine of Newcastle’s first 11 league games before Howe arrived. He’s started only two of the 17 games that have followed and could be on his way out of St James’ Park in the coming months.

New-boy Dan Burn, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez are ahead of Clark in the pecking order, and Newcastle could bring in another centre-back this summer to further strengthen the backline – LOSC Lille’s Sven Botman is one of many players on the Magpies’ radar.

Clark has little over 12 months remaining on his contract and looks unlikely to be handed an extension, so Newcastle may want to cash in early before his deal runs down if he has no future in the North-East.
