Newcastle’s Malick Thiaw helps Klopp secure first Germany win

Newcastle United defender Malick Thiaw completed the full match as Germany beat Serbia 2-0 on Thursday to give Jürgen Klopp his first victory as national team coach.

Thiaw started alongside Waldemar Anton in central defence at Munich’s Allianz Arena. The official DFB match record confirms he stayed on throughout, helping Germany finish with a clean sheet.

Tom Bischof opened the scoring after 39 minutes before Florian Wirtz added the second in the 61st minute.

The result followed a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands and a 1-0 defeat by Greece in Germany’s opening two Nations League fixtures under Klopp.

Malick Thiaw takes Germany opportunity

Thiaw’s appearance came after Nico Schlotterbeck’s injury opened up Germany’s defensive options. The Borussia Dortmund defender was ruled out of the Serbia and Greece matches with an ankle ligament injury.

A full game in a winning defence gives Thiaw a positive outing to build on, although Sunday’s selection will show whether Klopp retains him for the next test.

Germany visit Greece on Sunday, 4 October, with kick-off at 7.45pm BST. It is their final fixture of this international window.

For Newcastle supporters following the club’s players on international duty, that makes Sunday’s team sheet the next checkpoint after a successful evening for Thiaw.
