Newcastle keeper Horníček reveals two-hour wait before Czechia selection

Newcastle United goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček only discovered he would start against Croatia two hours before kick-off.

The Czechia international revealed the late selection call following Saturday’s 2-1 Nations League defeat, admitting the wait was an unfamiliar experience.

Speaking to iDNES after the match, Horníček explained that coach Santi Denia kept his goalkeepers waiting before confirming his choice.

However, he felt the approach helped keep the squad alert, including those who later came off the bench.

Horníček Czechia selection offers chance to impress

The appearance was Horníček’s first competitive outing for his country and only his second senior cap, following a friendly against Kosovo in May.

Newcastle’s goalkeeper said rivals Matěj Kovář and Antonín Kinský supported him when they learned he would start. He described a positive atmosphere between the three rather than tension over the decision.

Horníček also made his ambition clear.

“I hope my performance convinced the coach to give me more chances,” he told iDNES, translated from Czech.

As covered in our report on Horníček’s performance against Croatia, the Newcastle keeper produced an impressive late save despite the defeat.

England provides the next selection test

Czechia face England on Tuesday evening, offering Horníček another opportunity to press his case.

Newcastle teammate Lewis Hall is also awaiting an England selection decision.

At the time of his interview, Horníček said the goalkeeping position remained open. His competitive debut therefore represents a chance to build on, rather than confirmation that he has secured the shirt.
