Newcastle United confirm new five-man leadership group under Matthias Jaissle

Newcastle United have confirmed a new five-man leadership group for the 2026/27 season under Matthias Jaissle.

Captain Dan Burn and vice-captain Joelinton have been joined by Malick Thiaw, Yoane Wissa and Lewis Miley.

The group will help set standards on the pitch, inside the dressing room and around Newcastle’s training ground.

Newcastle confirm new leadership group

Newcastle officially confirmed that Thiaw, Wissa and Miley have been added alongside Burn and Joelinton.

Burn said the five players must take responsibility while recognising that leadership remains important throughout the wider squad.

The defender was appointed Newcastle captain in August after Matthias Jaissle replaced Eddie Howe.

Miley handed major Newcastle responsibility

Lewis Miley’s inclusion is particularly notable.

At 20, the academy graduate is significantly younger than the other members of the group but has already established himself as an important first-team player.

ReadNewcastle previously looked at why Miley’s long-term contract was one of Newcastle’s most important pieces of business.

The leadership announcement also underlines Thiaw and Wissa’s growing influence inside Jaissle’s squad.

All five players are included in our updated Newcastle United squad guide, which tracks the current first-team group throughout the season.
