There has been a ton of talk around the future of Nick Woltemade at Newcastle United in recent weeks. And the situation has been a bit of a roller coaster, to be honest.
Earlier in the month, there were reports that Woltemade did not want to leave. But then, more recent reports have claimed the opposite to be the case.
Has the German striker changed his mind over the last few days or weeks? That would not be outside the realm of possibility after what we have witnessed at the start of the campaign.
That being said, would Newcastle United consider the idea of Woltemade leaving this late in the window? It looks like we might have the answer to that as well.
Newcastle United make decision on Nick Woltemade exit
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United have no plans to let Woltemade leave the club in the wake of Will Osula’s new injury blow.
The extent of Osula’s injury is not clear just yet. But it is expected to keep him out for at least two more weeks. If that turns out to be the case, then it is not much to be worried about.
Osula did score nine goals last season. As a result, he might be in line for a more prominent role this time around. As for Woltemade, it is hard to figure out what the future holds for him.
To be honest, if you ask me, a two-week injury layoff is not significant enough to change a club’s plans surrounding a player. But for the time being, it looks like Newcastle United want to keep hold of Woltemade.
Where has it gone wrong for Woltemade at Newcastle?
Woltemade was signed for around £69 million last summer, add-ons included. And it would be an understatement to say that he has not even come close to meeting the expectations that the transfer fee would have automatically placed on him.
Woltemade had actually started off quite well. But he quickly lost his form and has not been able to regain it since then. He finished the season with just 11 goals.
Even more worryingly, he was not even played as a striker a lot of the time in the second half of last season. That is not what you expect after spending £69 million on someone to replace Alexander Isak.
Unfortunately, Woltemade looks to be an even worse fit in Matthias Jaissle’s system than he was under former manager Eddie Howe. And if he does not improve very quickly, it is hard to see a future for him at St James’ Park.
