Newcastle United have lost a lot with the departure of Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian’s move to Arsenal has now been officially confirmed. So, not only have the Magpies lost arguably their best player, but also their captain.
That is two things they will need to replace this summer. Newcastle United will need to bring in a midfielder with the quality to walk straight into the starting XI. After all, it is not just Guimaraes who has left. Sandro Tonali has done the same.
On the other hand, the Magpies will also need to find someone with leadership qualities. Let’s not overlook the fact that all the players they have signed this summer are youngsters.
Yes, there is no doubt about the talent here. But a lot of the time, that is not enough. Just look at Chelsea, who have signed Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck this summer. One of the key reasons behind that is what they add to that dressing room, not just on the pitch.
Newcastle United get closer to next signing
Fortunately, it looks like Newcastle United are trying to pull off a similar move as well. And they have gotten encouragement that it could be possible to pull off.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Newcastle United have held talks with the representatives of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The Danish international midfielder has confirmed his willingness to return to the Premier League.
Hojbjerg certainly has the pedigree for the role. He has played for Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur in the past. And right now, he is the captain of both the Denmark national team and Marseille.
The same report also goes on to state that Marseille are now under pressure to generate funds. As a result, the French club are prepared to sanction the midfielder’s departure for the right price. That figure is thought to be in the region of €15 million.
Hojbjerg would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle
Of course, if Newcastle United sign Hojbjerg, they will need to understand that there is going to be little to no future transfer value for the midfielder. But at the same time, just look at what he would bring to the team here and now.
This is clearly a very capable player. He is still captaining both his club and international team after all. On top of that, he brings Premier League know-how from his time at Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton.
In many ways, this feels like a no-brainer for Newcastle United. But then again, the Magpies are believed to be keeping other targets in their sights as well.
They have been linked several other midfielders over the past few days including Felix Nmecha, Lucas Bergvall, Petar Sucic, Luka Sucic and more.
