It would be a bit of an understatement to say that Newcastle United need to make additions to their squad in the final few weeks of the summer transfer window. Let’s put it this way, the core of this team has been completely wiped off over the past twelve months.
Alexander Isak leaving for Liverpool last summer was a blow. But what has transpired this time around has been a complete identity reset.
They have lost manager Eddie Howe alongside their three best players in the form of Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and now Bruno Guimaraes. There is no question that proven players need to be brought in to fill that void.
Newcastle United looking to sign former Bayern Munich midfielder
A new name has now cropped up on Newcastle United’s radar. It is not an unfamiliar one to fans of English football though, thanks to his history at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur. Other than that, he has also played for Bayern Munich. So, the pedigree cannot be questioned.
According to Sky Sports News, Newcastle United are exploring a move for Marseille and Denmark national team midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
This would not be a signing that would solve Newcastle United’s problems in the long run. Hojbjerg is already 31 years old. But for what the Magpies need at the moment, he might be perfect.
Of course, one thing you cannot overlook is the leadership that Newcastle United are set to lose with Guimaraes joining Arsenal. Someone like Hojbjerg would be more than good enough to replace that.
Hojbjerg captains both Marseille and the Danish national team. So, he is actually more than qualified to take over the reins from the departing Guimaraes.
Will Newcastle make move for Hojbjerg?
Obviously, at this point in time, this is just interest on the part of the Magpies. It remains to be seen whether they will make a serious move or not.
At 31 years of age, one would imagine that he would be available for a reasonable transfer fee. But at the same time, Marseille might not be open to losing their captain unless Newcastle United are ready to pay a premium to make it happen.
It is also worth mentioning that he is just the latest in a long list of names to be linked with Newcastle United over the past few weeks, as it has been clear for a while that Guimaraes was Arsenal-bound.
That list includes names like Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund, Petar Sucic of Inter Milan, Lucas Bergvall of Tottenham Hotspur, and several more.
