Newcastle United’s top target to replace Bruno Guimaraes named

Just like that, Bruno Guimaraes is gone. This might be the final sentence in what is truly the end of an era for Newcastle United. Eddie Howe, Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and now the club captain have all left in the last twelve months.

It is difficult to be positive if you are a Newcastle United fan. All the signings they have made so far have suggested that the focus is no longer on immediate success.

So, it will be very interesting to see how they go about replacing Guimaraes. Will they bring in someone who is experienced and capable of filling his boots from day one? Or will they once again focus on youth and potential?

If the recent reports are anything to go by, it looks like it is going to be the latter. Although, it might be a name that gets the Newcastle United fans excited for the future.

Newcastle United’s top choice to replace Guimaraes

According to ESPN Brasil, Danilo was considered the main name to replace Guimaraes at Newcastle United. But now the English club is turning its attention to Victor Froholdt.

Those claims are being backed by the media in Portugal as well. According to Record, Froholdt is indeed on the shortlist at Newcastle United to replace Guimaraes.

To be honest, it is not hard to see that being the case. On paper, Froholdt ticks all of the boxes that Newcastle United have looked at when signing players this summer.

Froholdt is 20 years of age but he is already a regular feature for FC Porto and is coming off an excellent debut campaign for the Potuguese club.

Before that, he was doing the same at FC Copenhagen. At the international level, he has also made 12 senior appearances for the Denmark national team.

Newcastle United have backed themselves into a corner with summer signings

Is Froholdt ready to come in and immediately replace someone of Guimaraes’ quality? If you ask me, he is not. But that does not mean that he could be not be a good signing in the long run. The talent is there for all to see.

The issue for Newcastle United might be exactly what Chelsea have faced in recent years. They have completely shifted their focus towards youth and potential.

Under these circumstances, it feels like no attention is being paid towards the need for experience and proven quality. The trick is to find the right balance. And things are starting to tilt in one direction at St James’ Park at this moment.
